What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small, rod or screw-shaped pieces of titanium that are surgically placed directly into your gum and jaw tissue. Essentially, these implants mimic the natural root of the tooth that you lost, bonding permanently with the surrounding tissue to provide support for a restoration (such as).

One of the biggest benefits of dental implants is that they place pressure on the gum and bone tissue when you chew, bite, and smile. In turn, this stimulates the tissue and prevents bone and gum resorption, which is a common issue among patients who have missing teeth.

This permanent option keeps your smile strong and healthy, and can improve the appearance of your smile. If you’re missing teeth, this fairly common procedure will strengthen and restore your smile with a natural-looking, long-lasting replacement that's easy to care for.

How much do dental implants cost?

Because dental implants are permanent and can last a lifetime, they are considered an investment in your dental health. Other solutions like dentures or bridges for missing teeth are removable and less durable, and will need to be replaced every few years. Though these removable options are initially less expensive, implants will save you time and money in the long run.

Money should never come between you and your dental health, and that’s why we provide resources to ensure that your dental implant treatment stays affordable and within your budget. We are in network with a wide range of insurance companies. If you don’t have insurance, we also offer payment plans for your treatment. How do I know if dental implants are right for me?

During your consultation, Dr. Herrera will start by taking a 3D image of your teeth to get an accurate picture of your dental health. If Dr. Herrera determines that your gums are healthy enough and you have sufficient jawbone to support an implant, the implant placement process will begin.

Some patients require pre-prosthetic surgery before receiving an implant. Since implants are surgically placed in your jawbone, Dr. Herrera may need to perform minor surgery to ensure that your replacement tooth fits securely and comfortably in your mouth. Pre-prosthetic surgeries can involve bone smoothing and reshaping, the removal of excess bone, or the removal of excess gum tissue. Dr. Herrera is skilled and gentle, and he will make sure that your new tooth fits perfectly with pre-prosthetic surgery.

How do the dental implant process work?

While the specifics of the process may vary somewhat based on the number of implants you need, the basics are usually the same. At your implant consultation, Dr. Herrera will examine your mouth and assess your oral health to determine whether implants are a viable option for you.

During your first appointment, Dr. Herrera will clean, sanitize, and numb the area where the implant will be placed. Oral and IV sedation are available to keep you calm and comfortable throughout your entire procedure. Then, a small incision will be made in your gum line, and the implant will be placed in the proper position. The area will be cleaned and sutured shut, and your healing process will begin.

Healing typically takes about 3-6 months. During this time, your bone and gum tissue bond with the implant permanently (this is known as “osseointegration”). Once healing and osseointegration are complete, Dr. Herrera will place your implant restoration, which may be a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on your needs. You’ll leave our office with a beautiful, natural-looking tooth. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

What if I'm missing more than one tooth?

If you are missing multiple teeth (or even a full arch), you have several options for restoring your smile at the Center for Oral and Facial Surgery at Glen Allen:

  • Implant-supported bridges – Unlike traditional bridges, implant-supported bridges use two dental implants to support multiple dental crowns (false teeth)
  • Implant-supported dentures – Implant-supported dentures can replace a full arch of upper, lower, or all of your teeth. They are similar to traditional dentures, but they snap directly onto a series of 4-6 dental implants, rather than being supported by the gums. This makes them more natural-looking and comfortable.
  • All-On-Four – All-On-Four uses a permanent dental bridge to replace all of your teeth. All-On-Four dental bridges are made of high-quality porcelain and do not have to be removed.

With All-On-Four, you’ll only need as little as four precisely placed implants to restore a full smile. This option is truly life-changing for those suffering from major tooth loss, and the Center for Oral and Facial Surgery at Glen Allen can’t wait to transform your smile. Give us a call today to schedule a consultation and learn more about All-On-Four! We are also proud to help patients from Richmond.
