What is orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is a corrective jaw surgery that straightens your jaw and corrects conditions related to jaw structure, improper growth, and symptoms of sleep apnea and TMJ disorders. The main purpose of orthognathic surgery is to correct bite issues, or malocclusion, that may be causing problems with speech, chewing, or even sleep. An improper bite happens when your upper and lower teeth don’t fit together correctly, and this can cause cosmetic issues as well as negatively affect your dental health.

When is orthognathic surgery necessary?

Issues with jaw bone structure typically begin at a young age. If this isn’t taken care of early, these issues can lead to bigger problems that can only be corrected with orthognathic surgery. We recommend getting your child in for an appointment with an orthodontist by age seven to correct bite issues as early as possible. However, when jaw irregularities are caused by things like a birth defect or facial trauma, orthognathic surgery may be necessary.

Does orthognathic surgery fix TMJ/TMD and sleep apnea?

When your upper and lower teeth don’t fit together correctly, you can put extra tension on the jaw joint or cause a misalignment of the jaw that blocks your airway. That's how an improper bite can lead to TMJ disorders or sleep apnea, which can wreak havoc on your daily life.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Herrera will assess your dental health by asking about symptoms and taking 3D images of your mouth to determine what is causing your TMD/TMJ or sleep apnea. Common symptoms of these disorders include morning headaches, joint pain or gum discomfort, snoring, and waking up breathless during the night. Orthognathic surgery can help you restore your confidence and your health by giving you a more aligned smile and putting an end to these debilitating symptoms.
